Athstead is a town on the banks of the river Athafon. It is a pilgrimage destination due to its being the birthplace of Irenaeus, the first High King of Faerie. There are numerous inns, taverns, souvenir shops, and a Mephitist shrine commemorating the Birthplace.
It was discovered during the Ballad of Adler Young that the actual Birthplace is in an old portion of the town, formerly named Aethstad, now submerged after the river changed course during an incident in the reign of King Carl the Adequate.
